I helped a friend with some money and on his promise that he will repay the amount. I am not getting the payback for a long time. Wanted to check if there is a legal remedy available to my problem.

1. you can serve him a legal notice through a lawyer to make payment of the outstanding amount along with the interest, 2. if payment is not made despite service of the legal notice, you can file a civil suit for the recovery of the amount, 3. chat, call records, WhatsApp record, if relevant, can prove your case and are admissible as an evidence

It seems from your Statement that You may not be having any document for the money you lent to your friend. But anyhow you just can take chance and get a legal notice served upon the friend,if he speaks something about. Otherwise in absence of any proof it may be difficult for you to redeem the situation.
