Dalveer Bhandari elected 2nd time as a Judge in ICJ

Dalveer Bhandari of India has been re-elected as the judge in the international court at The Hague, Netherlands. Justice Dalveer Bhandari got 183 votes in General Assembly while Justice Bhandari got all 15 votes in the Security Council. Bhandari was in competition with Britain’s candidate Christopher Greenwood, but at the last minute, Britain withdrew its candidate from the election.
On the victory of Justice Bhandari, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also tweeted,
“Vande Mataram – India won the International Court of Justice. Jai Hind’
Let us tell you that 15 judges were to be elected in the International Court, out of which 14 judges had been elected. For the 15th Judge, Greenwood from Britain and Justice Bhandari candidate from India was the participants. It was believed that the permanent members of the Security Council United Kingdom, Russia, France and China, can support the British claimant Greenwood.
Britain is the fifth permanent member of the Security Council. But just before the election of the 12th and final round, Britain’s permanent representative in the United Nations, Mathew Rycroft, gave the information related to the removal of Greenwood by writing to the General Assembly and the head of the Security Council.
Who is Dalveer Bhandari:
Dalveer Bhandari was also a former judge of the Supreme Court of India. He was born on 1 October 1947 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Dalveer Bhandari’s father and grandfather were members of the Rajasthan Bar Association. After completing the law studies from Jodhpur University, he advocated in the Rajasthan High Court.
Bhandari came to Delhi in 1991 and started advocating here. In October 2005, he became the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. Dalveer Bhandari, for the first time on June 19, 2012, took the oath of being a member of the International Court of Justice. He has also been a senior judge in the Supreme Court.
