The Supreme Court has cancelled the engineering degree awarded to thousands of students through correspondence education since 2001 in the four Deemed Universities of the country, including the Allahabad Agriculture Institute.

The apex court gave this decision on a petition challenging the recognition of engineering degree from correspondence.

Apart from this, there has been a ban on running any course in all Deemed Universities through correspondence education from the upcoming academic session without getting permission from the concerned academic (UGC, AICTE, DEC).

Deemed universities now have to get separate permission for each course. To operate a technical course Deemed University will have to seek permission from AICTE. At the same time, the apex court asked Deemed University to remove the term ‘University’ within a month.

The four Deemed University whose Department of correspondence has been dissolved are Allahabad Agriculture Institute, JRN Rajasthan University (Udaipur), Institute of Advanced Studies (Rajasthan) and Vinayak Mission Research Foundation (Tamil Nadu).

The bench of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goyal and Justice UU Lalit found that these four Deemed Universities did not seek permission from the concerned authority for engineering studies.
