Issue With Landlord/ Society

We are staying in an apartment in Mumbai. Recently, the roof of our flat fell in our hall and my roommate survived with minor injuries but most of our belongings damaged (worth more than 1 Lakh). This has happened because the family living above us was doing some tiles work and that pressure caused the collapse of the roof in our apartment. Initially, the responsible person and my landlord suggested we shouldn't go to BMC/ police and they would settle the matter internally with compensation for the minor injuries and the damage caused to our belongings in society. But now neither the responsible person nor the landlord is planning to compensate us properly and trying to redeploy the roof and throw us out. Can someone suggest what should be our plan of action now?
